Gospel by the Sea Benefit Concert: New Date – New Talent!

The Annual Gospel by the Sea Benefit Concert sponsored by St. Vincent’s House in Galveston, has a new date and new talent line-up. The new date for this gala event is April 19, 2008 and the headliner is the legendary “Five Blind Boys of Mississippi.” The event, which will once again be held at Moody Gardens Convention Center will highlight the diversity of the Galveston community by featuring choirs from throughout Galveston County.

The Five Blind Boys of Mississippi was one of the most popular and influential post-war gospel quartets. Powered by the vocals of lead singer Archie Brownlee, their single "Our Father" reached the Billboard R&B charts in the early 1950s, one of the first gospel records to do so.  The current group carries on in their tradition with three of the original members. The original 5 Blind Boys of Mississippi are : Sandy Foster, Joe Watson, Charles Montague, Jesse Brown, Curtis Foster and Robert Lewis with Willie Glover and John Whaley. Jesse Brown has been with the group since 1937 and Curtis Foster was originally with the Blind Boys of Alabama before joining the current group. The group started in year 1937 as a way for the original members to pay their tuition at the Piney Wood School for the Blind.

The group has since been inducted into the Black Gospel Hall of Fame and has spread their unique brand of harmonies throughout the United States, Europe and the Netherlands. They have performed at SRO concerts at the famed Apollo Theater in New York at Carnegie hall and at the Old Regal Theater in Chicago. A brief discography of their work includes: Father, I Stretch my Hand to Thee, There’s A God Somewhere, Another Direction, Tide of Life, Our Fathers. They have just released their 35th career album “Not Gonna Shut Up” on Melendo Records.

The Gospel by the Sea Benefit Concert will also feature the local groups that have made it a family favorite including Abundant Life Choir, NuFocus, Great St. Matthew Praise Dancers, Kids Choir – Galveston County Youth Choir, Moody Men from Moody Memorial 1st United Methodist Church , Spanish Choir and “Mama Randolph” the world’s oldest Gospel singer.
